# How to pack a carry-on without overpacking

> Build a trip capsule from outfits, not from 'just in case' piles. Fewer pieces, more complete looks.

Matchy is the fix. Pack outfits, not items. List the days. List the weather. For each day, assign one complete look plus a layer. Then count unique pieces. That number is the suitcase. 'Just in case' clothes are unfinished outfits you will not assemble in a hotel. A five-day trip is five looks and two repeats you can live with, not seventeen maybes on the bedroom floor.

Matchy builds a trip capsule from the clothes you own, for the days you actually have, so the carry-on closes. Download it on iPhone.

## The hotel-floor scramble is a planning problem

You overpack because each item is a maybe. The blue shirt might go with the trousers. The extra dress might be for the dinner that might happen. None of those are outfits. They are open loops. Capsule packing closes the loop before you leave.

## Build the capsule backwards from the days

1. Write the days as jobs. Flight, client, dinner, museum, travel home.
2. Attach weather to each day. High, low, rain.
3. Assign one outfit per job from clothes you own and have actually worn together.
4. Reuse bottoms. New tops if you must. Shoes: one walking pair, one if the dinner demands it.
5. Lay the unique pieces on the bed. If it does not fit in the bag, you still have maybes. Cut a look, not a random sock.

## What travel wardrobe apps get wrong

Acloset locks some packing features behind paid tiers on some reviews. Stylebook packing lists are thorough if you already cataloged everything. Indyx packing lists are a reason people stay. The miss is still the same: if the closet was never logged, the packing list is a blank sheet. Start from the rotation you already wear at home. A trip is not the week to finally photograph the winter archive.

## A five-day carry-on that actually closes

- 2 bottoms that already work with every top you packed
- 4 tops, including the one you wear on the plane
- 1 dress or knit set if evenings need it
- 1 layer that survives the aircraft and the evening
- Shoes you can walk in. Dress shoes only if the calendar is real

## Do this in Matchy

Download Matchy on iPhone. Add the clothes you already wear. Take tomorrow's look. That is the product. Free to start.

## Questions

**How many outfits for a 5-day trip?**

Five complete looks, with two pieces that repeat. Add one extra top if laundry is impossible. That is enough. A second pair of 'nice' shoes is how carry-ons explode.

**Should I pack a backup outfit?**

Pack a backup layer and underwear, not a backup identity. A spill is a cardigan problem. It is not a second suitcase problem.

**Do packing list apps replace a wardrobe app?**

A list of '3 tops, 2 bottoms' still lets you pick the wrong three tops. You want looks that already work together, pulled from the closet you have.
